The Seed by Helen Valentina

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sara Fraser, a solitary artist, is haunted by her dreams of a past life where she is deeply in love—a concept and experience foreign to her waking existence. Just as she is becoming known for her artistic endeavors, Sara launches a new series of paintings based on her dreams.

Robert Masters, a journalist in a passionless marriage, interviews Sara about her latest work, only to discover a personal connection to her paintings: it seems he is the man in her dreams. But when Robert, a man who prefers to peer inside others’ lives instead of his own, suddenly finds the intrigue of a possible shared history catapulting him into an intense romance with Sara, a story from the past begins to haunt both of them. As the lovers contemplate leaving the waking world to follow their dreams, the possibility of happiness dictates them to take risks they never could have imagined before.

The Seed is a romance with a dark undertow – a story of truth, loss, and the price two people must pay for love.

My thoughts:

♥♥♥♥♥

Might I just say, SWEET HALLELUJAH IT IS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE WROTE A ROMANCE THAT ISN’T FLUFFY!

Sorry about that…now then, my review:

I was reading this book when I had an epiphany–this is the kind of writing that is worth reading. This may sound odd, but truly–in a world with so many different varieties, genres and categories of books you rarely cross one that makes time stop and makes you feel like you have left your own life and become part of another person’s. In my opinion, this book will do that for you. It did for me.

While reading this novel, I realised that I had not bothered to look up from the pages for over an hour. The descriptive language that Helen Valentina uses when talking about her character’s lives, emotions and her setting made me forget most everything else in the world. I read this book late in the evening when I could be alone with it and truly appreciate the poetic nature of her passages.

As mentioned above, one of my favourite things about this book was that it was not the conventional fluffy romance that has become so popular. These characters have problems. They have emotions. They have bad things happen to them that they must sort through in order to survive and to reach their goals. Reading this novel will remind you how precious life is, how limited our view of the future is and that we are all at the mercy of the unknown. Still, it will also remind you that there are miracles in this world and love is one of them.

I really enjoyed seeing characters that had flaws and problems that didn’t feel contrived and like they were only there because the author had to make something wrong with their creations just for good measure.

If you are looking for a beautifully written book that you can get fully into, forget everything else and will provoke both laughter and tears in you, may I recommend “The Seed.” I am looking forward to many more books from this author in the future. She is on my to watch list from this point forward.
