Life of the author: A birthday poem

Get up in the morning
with numbers in my head
how many sales overnight
As I stumble from the bed

Go downstairs, get some coffee
as I’m staring at my phone
Three hours later
I realise I’m not alone

There’s dishes in the sink
and laundry to be done
I might squeeze in a sentence
but likely only one

I said today was for writing
that craft I’m trying to hone
but damn if Facebook didn’t distract me
I really blame this phone

Suddenly the evening comes
and dinner sits before me
Still thinking about writing
probably futile, I guess we’ll see

A quick check of my numbers
my figures and my rank
Now a moment before bedtime
No internet..a storm to thank

Now I’m off to slumber
after tucking in the kid
tomorrow I am going to write
at least more than I did

Get up in the morning…
with numbers in my head
