About that WordPress pic

Many of you have been very kind and supportive of my recent profile pic change. I appreciate that, but I am going to go back to my old photo. I don’t see the problem, It was a simple head shot cropped from a larger picture.  I realise this might seem like a stupid thing to announce, but here is the reason behind the logic. I thought my photo was fine. I didn’t really want to change it, until I got this in my inbox yesterday:

Ionia–

Hi,

It’s       X      from           X             blog here on wordpress. I know that you have a pretty big following and I wanted to share an opinion with you on something. You are a smart girl from what I can see and it pains me to see that a lot of the male bloggers are reblogging your posts and flirting with you in the comments. This demeans your intelligence and makes you look a lot less professional IMO. I think part of the problem is your wp photo. It looks rather suggestive and like you are trying to lure men in and of course, they will then think you are an easy target. I like it a lot when you do book reviews and the writing posts you do but all the stuff about squirrels and other nonsense stuff is just to get comments and attract attention. It is the wrong kind of attention. Literally everywhere I go on wordpress I see you pop up on some guy’s blog and there you are bantering back and forth with him in the comments. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with this exactly, its your choice how you want to appear to everyone. I’m just saying that you could have a better reputation if you were to change your picture to something more modest and keep the commenting with the males to a minimum. I hope you din’ think I’m being mean. I’m not trying to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. I’m really saying that people (men) will reblog and repost and talk everyone’s ear off about how great Ionia is and it has nothing to do with how hard you work or what you put out there. Those of us who don’t look lke you do will not get this kind of attention and I guess that’ how the world works, but still.

Sorry if this upsets you, just giving my opinion.

respectufully,

X

So here is what I have to say about the situation after careful examination. I am me. That is who I am. I don’t want to be you. That is your job. If you don’t like what i post then feel free not to read it. If you don’t like what I use as a profile photo then please, feel free not to look at it. If you do, then please feel welcome to be my friend. I am not infringing on your right to be who you are. If you disagree with me, good. I like carefully thought out debates. If you want to judge me for something you think I have done, go ahead but do it quietly.

In other words, if you are the mean sort who just want to complain:

Bite Me.

All you will do is break a tooth.

Didn’t like my headshot huh? It was too racy?

What do you all think? Is there a time when people should just mind their own business?

  1. Some people should mind their own business!!!!! You and I do a fair amount of bantering (even about squirrels). What does that say? I mean, really, who’s business is it if you banter or blog about something unrelated to book reviews.

This infuriates me…except it makes me laugh about how small some people are. Sheesh.

    1. You are one of my favourite people to talk to. I love your attitude toward things and you are always so much fun to talk to. I wonder sometimes if it is not partially my “British speech” that makes it seem like I am overly gracious. I tend to speak rather formally unless I am bantering away with someone I know.

      F*ck it I like squirrels. 🙂

      2. I had a similar thought. That we could all post pictures of our cat and it would not make a difference. There would still be people out to be spiteful just because they can. I suppose in a way posting this was just as low, but I didn’t want to feel like I had to take the abuse of anyone.

        I so appreciate your friendship.

      3. And you shouldn’t take ANY abuse. If I go to a blog, and am offended or just don’t like something, I have my finger trained to just move along. No one is forced to read anything.

This is the one place I can truly be myself. With my job, I have to be so careful what I say out there. Facebook can be a minefield because I’m too well known. But you all are just friends accepting me as I am (although I still must be careful since I could be “discovered”).

That they’re intelligent and writing on a topic I’m interested in. For all I know, you’re a 53-year-old man and you got me because of a fake pic. But that’s OK. You have a good blog. That’s what matters.

The next aunt comes in, unbuttons the top button of the blouse to give you an air of confidence and security. In walks the mother, takes one look at you and says that the blouse is all wrong for you and you need to change. So meh, each their own thoughts.

Second, I’ll say this, with a little history. My lady us gorgeous. She doesn’t put her pics up because of.. well, dogs, waiting in line, wagging their tales. That said, why is there this idea still being bandied about that a woman is in any way responsible for what a man thinks? So, you’re unprofessional because some dudes don’t know how to act? That’s your fault? WTF? ANYBODY that can sit there and have the gall to send out such a ridiculous email and not give one iota of a thought to the fact that a human being, regardless of gender, is responsible for his or her actions, online, offline, and other, should have his/her internet privileges revoked. For life. I’d go further than that, but that might make me sound like a fascist. People should mind their own business, else get a life that they may have their own business to mind.

I wasn’t going to post this but then throughout the day this niggling idea that I was just letting myself get smacked around cropped up. I did not speak English well enough to speak to anyone until I was around 20 years old. I still struggle with some words and tend to speak in a very formal tone until I am comfortable. I think my self conscious nature used to make me somewhat of a wallflower, but then I bloomed.

I usually avoid picture situations as well, so i do understand what you mean. I am sure she must be beautiful inside and out to have you care for her as you are such a great guy. (NO for goodness sake people I am not hitting on Sahm) sorry wanted to clarify.

Both your profile pics are gorgeous and frankly, it is no one’s business but your own – I’m pretty sure you can’t help being lovely, but putting a bag over your head, taking a picture and using that as your avatar isn’t going to help anyone feel any better about themselves. A reader recently said that they had a little trouble with the first chapter because they could not quite get a handle on the what was going on with Hannah describing her history as she drove back to her hometown. I can see that now because being a true story I know the sequence of things but a reader might not. Ignore the haters, they can only bring you down. 🙂

    1. I appreciate you Dom! I really don’t see what people are getting on about when they try to bring someone down. Life is too short to not be gracious. I say this and yet I incite violence against you with squirrels. I am a hypocrite.

  19. You know, Mentor Ionia, this Miss X reeks to me of jealousy and envy. You obviously have so many of us that adore you here and would stand up for you in an instant. Hell, I’ve lost almost forty pounds since December! That means I can probably fit into a little bikini for this little ‘picture revolution’ some would like to plan. Now that Miss X is probably aware of the fact that you are NOT going to take any abuse from her, she is probably balled up in a corner somewhere pissed off at herself for being such an ASS!! Just continue to be your remarkable, genuine, funny and sincere self. The haters can move along. Love you Ionia! We’ve got your back!

    1. Thank you so much for that warm and incredibly touching comment. i say we all just post a random who gives a crap pic! By the way 40 lbs? That is awesome! Holy cow woman!

I think she is probably wishing I would have inserted her blog name now. I did not out of respect, but now it just seems like it was the right thing to do anyway. Why call attention to her? I am so happy we have met and become friends. Thank you for all you do:)

      1. Thanks my love. I did a lot of pt for that 40 pounds! Lol. And why are you worried about respecting her? Did she respect you at all when she emailed you that horseshit? Oh, disregard… There’s a huge difference between the two of you. You’ve got CLASS! Xoxoxo

  20. I don’t banter with you because of your sexually suggestive headshot, Ionia. I do it for a much more shameless and callous reason — you gave my book a good review! So I guess I’m guilty on all counts: I’m male, I enjoy your blog, I’m grateful that you like my work and told the world about it, I do in fact like your picture — and just for the record, the full body shot ain’t bad either!

    1. Dean you make my day. I really don’t like your monster gravatar that shows up here as much as your photo though. I gave your book a good review because of that naughty pic of you in the bunny ears and fluffy tail…oh wait…that was Harry steinman. You know they are going to accuse me of flirting with you now too.

*Coyly shuffles foot. Write me another book studmuffin.

  24. Really? This person is basing their opinion on your gravatar? I’ll assume this blogger doesn’t know you personally. People do still judge a book……Maybe they should blogoff somewhere else.

I’d use your gravatar in a heartbeat if you let me. You are beautiful. Maybe we could invade the reader with your image by having everyone you know use your gravatar for a day. Hehe!

  25. Oh my God! Are you freaking kidding me! This really gets my blood boiling. You need to keep your comments with males to a minimum because you’re too attractive? So, if you were ugly it’d be okay? AHH! I don’t even know what to say to that! For this “X” person to say that men only re-blog your posts because you’re just a pretty face and that it has nothing to do with the content of your posts is insulting to you and those who re-blog your posts. And for the record, you banter back and forth with males AND females. I can attest to that! It’s called socializing, getting to know another person, building a friendship, obviously a foreign concept to “X.” And why is it so hard to believe that a beautiful woman can have brains too?! People immediately assume that her success is due to the way she looks and that everything is handed to her! Forget that she has worked hard to achieve success and BUSTS HER ASS to stay there! The fact that you are all over the blogosphere is a testament to your generous nature. You are a kind soul who genuinely cares about other people. This “X” person is envious of your success and just trying to beat you down. Don’t let her!! (Yes, I think “X” is a female).DO NOT change a thing Ionia! We love you just the way you are! Oh, and I love the uncropped photo. You go girl!!!

Methinks someone is jealous of your popularity and success – which are because you are a great writer and fabulous wordpress community member by the way, regardless of photo or not (which you do look very pretty in, but that’s probably something else to make the person jealous!). Express yourself as you want my dear Ionia – me and many, many others will always be in your corner my friend!!! 🙂

  27. It is appalling the way that some people feel that they can interfere in your life and dictate to you how to act and think. I believe it is more an indication of the small minded mentality of the author of the letter than anything else. It is very likely that her own posts lack the intelligence, humour and insight of yours and her bitterness leads her to believe that it is not her own authorial inadequacies, but rather the simple fact that you have a more appealing profile picture, that means you are read by thousands, whilst she probably struggles for followers.

People are not generally stupid, and she manages to insult not only you but your followers also, with the implication that all the male followers of your blog are only here because of the way you look. Personally I love the way you look, but I should read your blog were there a picture of a gorilla as your profile picture. In fact I do follow a couple of blogs where the profile picture is of a gorilla 🙂

Ignore her and do what you do best. Continue to write clever and witty posts and igore the small minded rantings of this letter writer and please do not degenerate into the poor English usage and spelling that she employs. Carry on.

    1. We must be following some of the same blogs. I have a few blogs I follow that have gorillas as their profile pic too. I thank you, Julian, for your support in all of my various adventures.

I figure that my blog is personal. It is about me. I do cater to what others like to read as of course it would be depressing for me to not have anyone find what I write entertaining. Still, as it is a personal blog I also post what I feel is right for me. I think I just need to stop trying to make everyone happy all the time. There is no way for me to.

I shall follow the advice of a very wise man who once said “F*ck it.”

  28. Seeing as how my initial thoughts on person X are slightly judgmental and unprofessional, I’ll refrain from posting them and simply say that I follow your blog because you’ve got something to say and you’re a damn fine writer. I’ve discovered many new and talented authors and bloggers because of you, and the fact that you’re a beautiful woman doesn’t change that. I was just having this conversation the other day. Why should a pretty woman have to play down her beauty to be taken seriously, to be accepted as someone with something important to say? It sounds like a problem with those who have this opinion, and not the beautiful woman. Keep up the good work. Luv ya, lady!

    1. I completely agree. It is so sad that a woman is judged on her looks alone and not what she has to offer in her professional life. I say we take out a giant billboard and moon them all.

I am so happy I have you in my corner. You are a beautiful lady as well! ❤

  30. While I didn’t see the replacement photo, I don’t mind your current photo. Oddly enough, your name made me think you were a black woman. And really, your picture is just fine. I don’t really have any nice photos of me without crappy backgrounds.

As far as anyone’s opinion of you because of your photo, it is obvious that you are a lovely, intelligent person, and you also happen to be pretty. While I hate our preoccupation with physical appearance, I wonder what this person would say if your picture had been more “professional” or if the person had thought you were no so physically attractive. It’s like saying people can’t be smart and physically appealing. And last time i check, you had tons of people you chat with and it’s pretty 50/50 on the gender. Plus, I think you could tell between friendly banter and someone trying to hit on you.

And frankly, I like the squirrels. And who doesn’t love cupcakes? You gotta have some fun! I think you are a terrific person, very astute, and a blast to talk to. Keep it up!

  31. I say there wasn’t enough banter between you and Charles to get the point across to X. I think you need to do it some more! I’m sorry, I’m laughing now with pride for you after seeing the whole body shot! Too bad it won’t fit into the little square WP gives you! 🙂 At first, though, I read with my mouth hanging down to my knees, almost unable to believe that someone actually wrote that–but I don’t think even you are creative enough to make it up!

However, I have an idea to make X feel better–you give me YOUR body and I’ll give you MINE! Then you can post a photo of your head on MY body, and X will be convinced that no one could possibly flirt with you for your body! That will make X happy. Meanwhile my husband will be flirting outrageously with me in amazed delight at my new body, which will make both him AND me happy! I’m sorry YOU won’t be able to be happy, Ionia, but hey, everybody in the world can’t be happy at the same time, and I think 3 out of 4 is pretty good odds!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . So you can sign here on the dotted line if you accept my proposal. P. S. You might want to take a closer look at my gravatar photo–there’s a reason I’m hiding half of myself in a construction dumpster! ROFL!

  32. What on earth!! I firmly believe in “You can think what you want, but you cant say (or do) what you want”. I think you should do whatever you want on your blog, and talk to whoever you want. If people support or interact with you for the wrong reasons it’s their fault. What goes for one goes for the other, so if you interact with all your readers, why should you now not interact with males because they “flirt” with you?

Your WP pic was never racy in the first place, IMO.

I strongly believe you should always be who you are and I really don’t understand why people think that their opinion is so important they should mail it to you! Some people really should do more charity if they have that much time to spare! 😉
Sweet friend, you are beautiful and smart and don’t let anyone tell you differently!
(Sorry for all the !!!!, but I can lose my temper a bit when people are saying this kind of crazy things to a friend of mine) Love you they way you are!
